One thing that I did well in high school was in math though not everyone does well in math and sometimes it is hard for them to get help either that they are afraid to ask for help or they don't want to look stupid and want to do everything them selves. But what ever reason it is learning math has become easier now than ever before. I always did well in math till I got to calculas in high school till I got lazy or what ever reason I started to fail my first math class ever. After that I started having problems in math when I got in to college and when I started to do high level math trying to pick back up my math from high school that I had not done in a long time. I had to relearn a lot of things and in doing so was hard for me to do.
Though like many people we are good at different things and not so strong at others but it does not mean we can't learn it. This is where I see Khan Academy come in. I am able to go back and do math at my own pace and find where I am struggling and where I know what I know. For instance if I did not learn my rules of exponents I may be able to pass an exponents test that a teach gives me but later down the road when I am doing different functions in algebra or calculus then it may hurt me a lot that I never learned how to do them properly even though I did pass that test back then. But now with the Khan Academy I am able to go back and test my self to help improve my self.
So how can this be used? well I personally am going to be using it for my self to go back and learn things that I should have learned and go over areas that I know I did bad in college. But I am also going to using this as supplemental materiel for my own children's education while I teach them mathematics.
Khan has done a good job in making the videos short for people like me that have short attention spans. All the videos in math are around 8 minutes long. But not only did they keep my attention with the videos but they made it so that you earn points for watching videos and you earn points for the more lessons you do and if you do them well you get more points. They make play into the addictive nature of earning points for most people. Which helps kids as they can compete with their friends if they like over how many points they have or over how many different badges they get.
How this helps teachers and parents. If your a parent and your wanting your child to do some work out side of class to make sure that they are knowing that they are being tough in school then you can have your child on khan and set your self up as a coach. This allows you to monitor them and see where they are struggling and where they are good at. They give you statistics on how long they where on and how often they got on. They show specific questions that they got wrong and you can see how it was supposed to be done. All the statistics that they give you as a parent helps you determine how you can best help your child succeed in school. The same thing is true for teachers if they have their students on khan academy they are able to see where they are struggling better than any test will tell them. This allows them to know how hard they are working and if they need more attention or less if they understand it. The statistics for khan academy is what makes me love this website the most as it really give you the power to find how to best help the learner if that is yourself or a child.
I encourage everyone to join and check it out for your self and for others that you know. If you feel that this is good providing free education for the world not just a select few then help them develop it more and put more lessons up there than just math. Online File Backup - Business
Businesses need a good disaster recovery plan and in that is data backup. I use this when I was in school to make sure my research papers did not get lost because if I had lost a 25 page research paper it would kill my grade and make me loss a lot of money. So how can a company effectively keep their data backed up at the minimal cost.
There are now many different online backup solutions for businesses and home users out there today. But they all cost different and offer different features. And some do it by strictly amount of space and some do both amount and computers.
Dropbox is one of these services that offer backup service. Their pricing is based on amount of space. I personally have never used the service so I do not know if they allow you have more than one computer on the account.

The solution I personaly use is an Open source one that comes with Ubuntu called Ubuntu One. They are like dropbox, they give you the first 2 GB free, but they allow as many computers as you need on the plan. You buy size of space type of plans. In comparison to drop box Ubuntu One is half the cost and they are nicer as you can just add 20GB more if you need more and if you need more than 22GB then you can add another 20 GB. They also allow you to buy their MP3's from their store and they don't count it as space against you the same thing that Amazon adopted after they did it and then Apple with their iCloud.
So for a small business that does not need that much space but just enough to backup their small database files, word documents, spreadsheets, and what not the best choice I see for the cheapest price is Ubuntu One not only is it cheaper but your supporting the Open Source community when you do use their service and spreading the knowledge of Ubuntu.

Learning to Type - Software
Learning to touch type is one of the most effective skills that a child or worker can learn these days. Sense I have been learning a new keyboard layout called Dvorak I have been trying out a few different websites and open source software in my learning methods.
One of the programs that I have been trying out is one called Klavaro
It not the most graphical typing application but it works very well. They have builds for linux and windows. They support multiple keyboard layouts and different languages in each they support layouts that you want to build our self. It also supports graphing your progress. So you can see the progress of how well your learning and how accurate your doing. they give you words per minute and characters per second which is fun just seeing how well you do compared to the past. If your teaching a class this is an easy one for people to use.
the next would be dvorak7min this is a linux only program. The home screen gives you 29 different tests that work you through learning the whole keyboard in what I think is a very effective way. You don't have to be using a dvorak keyboard to use this program but it may confuze you if you have the keyboard layout above the text which I would just hide anyways. though one thing I like about this one is it does not allow you to make mistakes you must press the letter before it goes on to the next letter. so for instance if the line said 'ahha' and you you typed ahaa it would stop at ahh till you typed the h. the program also keeps Words per second, words per minute, misses, seconds, and your % ratio of misses to characters. I personally prefer this program because it is simple just black and white, or what ever terminal color you have.
Another good typing for Dvorak learning is

they have a nice simple site and will grade you on how fast you type and you can keep trying till you beat your self and move at your own pace.

Though this may not be the very best for those that are starting out but it is a great place if your teaching a class and your wanting to use something that is random and use it for a test taker. It graphs the users progress and does not require you to register to use it. Though you need to register if you want your progresses saved from one visit to the next. This also does not matter which keyboard layout you may be using whether it be dvorak, qwerty, or colemak your system will translate it all for the website.
I hope this helps people learn typing and know that you don't have to spend a lot to get good free resources.

How to Prevent Viruses on Windows
Getting viruses on your computer can be costly in both time and if you get them professionally removed then it may cost you a bunch of money. To keep from having to waste all that time and money and keep your computer healthy and your private data safe it is better to prevent your self from getting viruses in the first place.
The first thing you will need is to make sure that there is not already any viruses or worms on your computer to start with. If your starting with a new computer is always the best.
so step one would be installing firefox, chrome, opera, or another web browser other than windows IE. If you must use IE then make sure it is updated to the newest version which right now is version 9.
the second thing is to get a good anti virus installed on your computer and always download the anti virus software from their venders website not anywhere else.

I would suggest that everyone get this for their Firefox browser as it is an amazing plugin that helps you see if a site is good or not before you even get to the site. For instance if i am googling local tech repair the plugin will automatically check each link on google and show either green, yellow, or red depending on how safe the website is.
You can also set the plugin to warn you if your going to an untrusted website or a site that you have given a poor rating to.

Ipad 2 vs Netbook
I recently been asked which would be better to get for a youth pastor. An iPad 2 by Apple or a netbook computer? This is a very interesting cause as iPads are becoming very popular for business to think that iPads are the way to go right? well I personally think that a Netbook still out performs a iPad anyday. Lets look at why I think this
Lets first look at the positives for having an iPad 2
Advantages:
portable
good battery life ~10 hours
cheap apps
touch screen
"coolness" factor
some business apps (like keynote)
and its made by apple
Now the with all that it comes to around ~$615 price tag for all that for the lowest end model.
now lets look at some of the internals of the iPad.
It runs at ~.9 ghz slightly under that, which is 2 cores. It can run 2 threads which is not unusual for non Intel processors. And a half a gb of ram. They state that it is 16gb of ram on their site because they can because the hard drive they use is the ram.
now that we have covered iPads lets go on the other perspective on what businesses need.
A business person needs portable and powerful devices, they need cheap priced devices, and they need them to work and last long while using them.
Netbooks Advantages:
cheaper than iPads
have physical keyboard - though small
ability to install actual applications not built for iPads or mobile devices
more powerful
up to 2-4gb of ram
high end processors
cheaper repair costs
USB ports
SD card readers
possibly a VGA out
so this is what i suggested to my friend that was debating between the ipad 2 and a netbook
first of all I told him that he probably wants something that will allow him to do his work fast. He will be using his device for presentations, writing sermons, and other things.
he needs something that he can multi task on and not to mention use Flash on.
I suggested that he get a Atom n550 or a N570 preferably the later.
Here is one of the computers I showed him for his needs that would out perform an ipad and also have much more memory.

which is a touch screen netbook and the processor of the N570.
I also suggested that he look in to Ubuntu netbook remix. which with their next release will have multi touch capabilities.

Why I As A Parent Love Linux
So I figure I would write why I love Linux for my family. Most people use windows on this planet and the computer repair industry is very booming because of them. I personally use Ubuntu Linux which is very well designed and done. It has a Gnome Graphical User Interface (GUI) which very basic and easy to use. But, I am not stuck with this for my kids if I ever wanted to give them my old laptop and make sure that they are using and playing educational games and learning how to use a computer in the mean time there are a plethora of application and different Linux distributions for children.
For instance http://www.qimo4kids.com/ is a OS based on Ubuntu that is targeted for kids to learn using a computer and learn using Linux.
There is also http://edubuntu.org/about which is also another OS dedicated for ages 3 and up.
and what one laptop per child uses http://www.sugarlabs.org which has a wonderful and easy to use GUI.
Games and Education
Sense I use Ubuntu I will describe a little on how easy it is to install new games or educational software. With Ubuntu all you need to do to search for new software is go to applications and then software center. Think of it as a Free App center kinda like the Apple store but everything is free.
You can search for specific software or you can browse by categories and find different software. This is nice because i can easily get my child a new game or educational software to help them learning typing or just clicking the mouse. Some of the educational software I have used with my family and extended family are the Childsplay software that aims at younger kids learning to use a computer and learning how to sound association and memory games.
Not only is it great for my kids but sense Linux runs better than windows does on older computers i don't have to worry about my old computers being slow like i would if they where running windows.

This is upgradeable to keep all my family backed up and so if anything goes wrong on a computer i don't have to worry about losing my hard work or my kids hard work when writing papers.
there is a lot of help when it comes to repairing ubuntu. i can out how to fix almost anything by just asking or searching on the ubuntu forums.
But first ubuntu needs to break before i can fix it right. well i have had less problems with Linux than i have had with windows and sense most viruses are programed to take advantage of windows bugs this helps me stay away from these problems. which means i save money in the long run of computer repairs. I also don't have to buy any Microsoft Office suite because Ubuntu comes with its own office which is called open office for free again.
Again with the free stuff is that i don't have to pay for any new OS because that is also free.
i could keep going on about how nice Linux is for me and my family but i think i will leave it with this.

there is a lot of help when it comes to repairing ubuntu. i can out how to fix almost anything by just asking or searching on the ubuntu forums.
But first ubuntu needs to break before i can fix it right. well i have had less problems with Linux than i have had with windows and sense most viruses are programed to take advantage of windows bugs this helps me stay away from these problems. which means i save money in the long run of computer repairs. I also don't have to buy any Microsoft Office suite because Ubuntu comes with its own office which is called open office for free again.
Again with the free stuff is that i don't have to pay for any new OS because that is also free.
i could keep going on about how nice Linux is for me and my family but i think i will leave it with this.
linux is great, well designed, kid friendly, and above all loaded with options of free software to save me money.
